ShaverR6 4th Generation Thread OP | Hello, I am new to sailing but not new to R/C. I have been looking around for sailboats and pretty much all of them have been made of ABS and all look the same. I am really looking for a wooden hulled sailboat that looks so good that it could be put on display when not in the water. I came accross the Billing boats Dragon and it seems perfect, except for one thing. The Dragon is supposed to be a display model only, but i have heard that it can be converted to R/C. I was wondering, what type of modifications would be needed to acheive this? One thing that i noticed was that the keel was rather short and doesnt seem to have any ballast. Would this make the boat unstable? I would apprecieate any info that could be provided. Thanks! |

Chris P Registered User | Had this kit quite a while ago(I built it probably 20 yrs ago from a 30? yr old kit, so take this info with quite a few grains of salt). The kit came with a solid lead keel. As I remember mine sat a little below the designed waterline with the rc set in it and would dip the rail easily but wouldn't heel over much more. I don't recall exactly how I set up the RC. I think I just had the main on a long arm servo in front of the mast. Also I fiberglassed and painted the hull as I did a poor job on the planking. It couldn't have been too hard as it was my first sailboat and I was fairly young and dumb. It's a beautiful boat and was fun to sail. |

pompebled Boaters are nice people. | Hi Shaver, As stated above the Dragen was designed as a display model, making it RC requires a lightweight hull, or a scaled up one, to get the extra bouyancy for the RC components. @Don: If you haven't started planking yet, take out the Dremel and reduce the amount of wood in the frame by at least 50% (more is even better), the hull will be stable enough if you add a thin (outside) layer of glasscloth and epoxy resin. Regards, Jan. |
